What is the DNA of a Baptist, really? 

We Kiwi Bap­tists love to say that “mission is in our DNA”. A quick Google tells me that DNA is “the fun­da­men­tal and dis­tinc­tive char­ac­ter­is­tics or qual­i­ties of someone or some­thing, espe­cially when regarded as unchange­able”. We’re essen­tially saying that mission is an unchange­able part of who we are and what we do… so unchange­able and inte­gral, in fact, that it inter­acts with and affects every other part of our lives. When we say mission is in our DNA, we are acknowl­edg­ing that mission is part of God’s unified agenda out­work­ing itself in our lives. But if that’s true, what is it in unity with?
